My Beliefs: It’s Figured Out!
•As I have been studying technology this semester I definitely have become a believer. I realize the changes technology has brought to our country and other places around the world. These changes have been great and we often hear the past generations complaining about them. We live in a changing world and no matter who complains we need to be ready to adapt to change and in this be willing to learn whatever we need to survive. I was that girl that slightly complained about change and now I have come to the knowledge that I need to wake up today and learn about this new phenomenon of technology. I’ve always been driven and I now more than ever want to learn all I can about computers and software. I’m willing to do whatever it takes, whether the last step is getting a personal tutor. Luckily in this last assignment I have learned where to go to find help and workshops concerning my many questions. I have learned about so many programs this semester that will aid me in teaching my future students.
•This two credit hour class will be so worthwhile for me and in the end I know that I’ll be able to say, “I REALLY DID LEARN SOMETHING VAULEABLE IN THIS CLASS.” This is why I’m at college, and am grateful to be able to say these kinds of sentences. I plan to use technology in my classes and I hope the school where I teach has many opportunities for me and my students to learn in such an environment. I’m going to be an English teacher and technology comes second to the subject. The two ideas might as well go together. In almost everything I teach some kind of technology is needed. For example, in researching the internet is such a needed tool. Then I can hardly wait to use all the things I’ve learned about such as PowerPoint and Google Documents in my classes. I will find several ways to use technology!
VIDEO: “THE CONNECTED CLASSROOM”
•The video makes me think back to the same idea of having a moral responsibility to teach our students, “how they learn best.” As teachers we are like the parent that knows best, we know the importance in preparing them for their “universe.” A universe that looks to technology in its future and relies on it more than the average person has come to realize. In the video, it talks about how the average learner will have twelve to fourteen jobs in their lifetime. I hope to prepare my students in accomplishing their goals and to survive such circumstances as changing jobs. I’ll teach them how to use technology and require assignments that will guide them as they become contributing citizens in our universe. Overall, I hope to teach my students the importance of technology and make sure they understand its value. I want them to know, “we are currently preparing people for jobs that don’t exist.” I will educate my students.

Lessons Learned
Lessons Learned: Many
•After studying the articles and watching several articles my eyes have definitely been opened. I can’t believe how technology is changing our lives in many positive ways. I would have never thought I would live to see the day when schools stop producing year books and creating small magazines instead. This idea of course is because of technology and yearbooks are no longer needed because of Facebook and similar sites. Then I also would have never thought that teachers could create online virtual sites for their students cutting down on educational expensive. Then not to mention computers with touch screens, who would have thought. Then in the article titled, “The New WWW,” it talks about how technology is going to become faster than ever and that it will flow from movie to video conference. (Etc) Technology is going to stream so easily and make our learning experiences happen quicker. We will be able to accomplish a lot more in one day as teachers. This idea of streaming is unbelievable to me and its exciting that it will happen in the near future. Technology is evolving whether our past generations like it or not and this is why it is so important to be willing to learn it.
• Another lesson learned for me is concerning short hand. Until now, I haven’t taken notice to the never ending amount of short hand phrases that exist. I have noticed in my classes that several of my teachers and classmates use short hand phrases. I’m usually the one out of the loop and confused for the first moment or two until someone tells me what these abbreviations mean. In the article titled, “The Next Generation of Online Shorthand,” reiterates that internet short hand is always changing. I think the best way to keep updated is every so often take notice of the lingo used on blogs and other sites. Lastly I keep hearing about podcasts and have finally figured out the definition. It’s an internet based learning device that can help teachers and students learn about information.

Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths and Weaknesses: Planning on Accomplishing My Goals
•First, I notice that I struggle with technology that I have never been introduced to before in my education. Such as video conferencing and spread sheets. As I notice my weakness in taking the UNI survey I also know that this is the beginning to an introduction to unfamiliar technologies. I have noted that I need more experience using technologies in my classes. I am unfamiliar with displaying projectors and laser disc players. It may not be a bad idea for me to ask my teachers how they are able to get these technologies up and working in their classes. The biggest weakness I have is I sometimes choose not to use technology because I think it is “easier.” I would have never thought to use software to “display information graphically for brainstorming or decision making.” I figured this out from taking the UNI survey. Also, I lack a confidence in technology that I am slowing obtaining from taking this class. This would fall under the Net Standard as one of the requirements that says, “Teachers demonstrate a sound understanding of technology operations and concepts.” Another Net Standard talks about designing learning supported by technology and I have decided I need to plan for more technology in the current lesson plans I’m writing. A workshop that will help me overcome my weaknesses and accomplish my goals is called, "Multimedia Projects." In the class, I will learn about free software programs and websites that will help me teach my students. Then the next workshop is called, "Digital Video Projects." I don't know a lot about videos and confused about the set up and how it all works. This workshop will help achieve many of my goals as I seek to see the bigger picture.

For example, in the UNI survey one of the questions is about using correct technology terminology. 2) I would like to envision the bigger picture of computers. (Etc) I would like to become an expert on these things. 3) I would really like to know how to use more technology devices to create more learning activities. 4) Based on the Net Standards I plan to evaluate myself as a teacher every month or so concluding how I’m doing using technology.

We Learned PP YaY!
PowerPoint Activities: We Did It!
My team ended up doing three different PowerPoint activities. We enjoyed working together in class. Every once in awhile my team member would say, “Ashley what do you think about this on the PowerPoint activity.” It was nice to be able to give feed back and also receive feedback. I can envision the future and I know that it is going to be so important to know how to work with others. I think of the slogan, “play nice” and I feel each group project I do in class teaches me how to work well with others. I have also figured out that it makes work ten times easier with the help of other people. Now I would tell others that they would be almost “stupid,” not to take the help from other people. I see myself getting together with my future seventh grade co-workers and putting together PowerPoint activities. I envision each one of my co-workers including myself taking turns putting together PowerPoint activities based on what were learning at the time.
My group noticed how many different PowerPoint activities we were able to choose from in the book. We choose to do comic comma activity and the two others were both printable activities. Our intentions were to have one that was hands on and the other that was more for visual learners. This is the importance of PowerPoint activities: is gives many types of learners several chances to learn. If students do not learn from one PowerPoint activity, they can learn from another type. As teachers, it is important that we never throw out our options and computers make this possible. There is a never-ending amount of options. As I have been studying, I have come to a conclusion that I believe it takes computer activities to be a better teacher. I want to be that better teacher and though I sometimes struggle with computers, I will learn because I care about my future students.
My group finished our PowerPoint activities in class. We were happy and excited as we looked at the finished project. One of my group member’s was impressed at the work I did on one of the activities. My group is very encouraging and that is what makes such a good group. I would like to teach my students about group work and also enlighten them on its greatness. I would want them to self-assess themselves as we do in our class after a group project. This activity made me think about many different ideas I would like to teach in my class.

The video was helpful in bringing my attention to common mistakes made while using PowerPoint. The first mistake people make is writing everything they want to say on their PowerPoint slides. This just makes everything boring. When I am a teacher I will make sure, I avoid cramming to much information by having note cards. This will help me teach PowerPoint activities in a way that my students will be able to learn. The video talks about how animation can become distraction to audiences. I am going to be a seventh grade English teacher and have realized how easily twelve years olds are distracted. I will definitely keep animation at a minimum and if I use it, I will have a reason. Another idea that the video talks about is how using to many bullet points can be distracting. Seventh graders need a lot of reiteration and I do not want to overwhelm them with to much information or bullet points. In realizing what we, as teachers should not do in PowerPoint we now know what we should do to better aid our students to learn.

Lets Learn PowerPoint~!
PowerPoint
◦Learning about PowerPoint activities will come in very handy when I become a teacher. In class, I am working on a comic presentation with group members. In this particular presentation, our goal is to teach our students about commas and other common grammatical errors. I believe that students will remember the information given because the PowerPoint is visual. In the comic our group created, a teacher and a student struggle together to learn about grammatical mistakes. I am hoping my students will relate to the student who has many grammatical questions.
◦I have the book with fifty different PowerPoint presentations and I plan to use many in my class to see what works best with my students. I am assuming that several different ideas will work and they will be able to learn from many of the activities. Another PowerPoint activity that I would see myself using as a teacher is titled, “The Best and the Worst.” Through the help of the PowerPoint, I will have my students choose a future job and research five good and five bad things about the job. It would have meaning to their future goals and at the same time, I would be able to teach the objective of Inquiry.
◦Giving students PowerPoint activities leads them to be able to think on many different levels. For instance the PowerPoint activity “The Best and the Worst,” has verbal, logical, mathematical and interpersonal intelligences. It is important that students are given the chance to use many multiple intelligences and PowerPoint makes this happen. There is no excuse for not using PowerPoint activities especially when there are so many examples.

WebQuest Final
WebQuest Final
My group has worked hard to finish our WebQuest. In the past, I have not enjoyed group projects but my thoughts are now changing. Having four people coming up with ideas was wonderful. We would have never come up with such a thought provoking project without the help of each other. The best part is we created something great in a manageable amount of time because we each took a different role in the project. I can envision myself working at a school and working together with other seventh grade teachers and coming up with a WebQuest. From this experience, I will be even more willing to work with others and look for opportunities to do so. The students will benefit most from their teachers working together. More brains are always better than one.
In my group, our WebQuest was for students to make a four stanza Found poem. As a group, we came up and created two different examples. I see myself doing this in the future with other WebQuests I create in my classes. It helps students to see some of the overall expectations of something as driven and direct as a WebQuest.
Our group did a lot of researching of authors in creating our WebQuest. Our students would take notice and study several authors making the project a worthwhile learning experience. When I am a teacher, I also see myself doing a lot of research and checking out sources finding the best ones. In doing so, you put a lot of thinking in the project and your students will benefit a lot.

Dalton Sherman makes teachers and many others realize how important it is to believe in students. He says, “Do you believe in me, I believe in me.” For me that means caring about your students and trusting them to succeed. When I am a teacher I want to make sure, I encourage and help my students find an inner confidence. (Especially if they do not already have it) I see myself giving assignments and guiding them in the right direction giving feedback. When my students make mistakes or cannot understand a concept I will say, “YOU CAN DO IT! We will do it together.” Sherman brings up an important point about teachers working together. It is so important to trust your fellow coworkers. Just as I will believe in my students, I should also believe in my colleague’s. I know I will have a large respect for the people I work with and will be excited to ask for help or ideas. Overall, after listening to Sherman’s confidence tells me, anything is possible and as he explains, we should make the sky our limit for our students.

WebQuest 1--It's Amazing!
WebQuest: Learning will Happen
WebQuest is a way for students to work on projects that will make them use their cognitive thinking skills. The project that I am creating for my students is a poetry assignment. Students will be required to research poetry and authors and write several Found poems. (Creating a poem with the information they found) Through this WebQuest they will be able to access almost all the materials they need to accomplish their goal. Not to mention they will learn about so many poets and become to respect them if not love them. I hope that this project will help those that don’t enjoy poetry and enable them to see that poetry can be a lot of fun. One of the most important things that I hope for my students to take from this project is the idea of genres. Most of the poets they research will be Modern American poets and my desire is for them to gain a better understanding of this time period. Also for those students who love music they will be able to identify with slam poetry because it is lyrically based. All students will finish this assignment knowing more than one thing than they did before they began. After collaborating and creating a WebQuest I have decided that I will be using this internet device in my classroom. It is one more beneficial technique for students to learn. In the future I see myself creating cultural, historical, and literature based WebQuests. I can’t wait to create a WebQuest about a classical book my class is reading. In everything that we do as teachers we have to remember to always have a purpose and WebQuest keeps this idea in check.

The video brought up many important points about the student’s teachers will be teaching. Things have changed significantly enough that we should notice a change in our classrooms from even when we were in school. In the video it says, “Why do so many classrooms still resemble those from the 1960’s?” As teachers our classrooms should be a space for creative learning to take place. There should be several options in different routines that create learning opportunities. After watching this video I was enlightened to the points of teaching student’s competition, cooperation and collaboration. I see myself using group projects in my classroom to teach my students all three of these important ideas. In the work place students will really benefit from learning these skills. Almost everything you do anymore is a collaborated and needs cooperation. My students will learn by working together with others students because learning is social. I will create a safe environment for my students where they can, “talk, build, create, and collaborate.”

In everything that we do as teachers we have to remember to always have a purpose and WebQuest keeps this idea in check.
Video: Three Steps
The video brought up many important points about the student’s teachers will be teaching. Things have changed significantly enough that we should notice a change in our classrooms from even when we were in school. In the video it says, “Why do so many classrooms still resemble those from the 1960’s?” As teachers our classrooms should be a space for creative learning to take place. There should be several options in different routines that create learning opportunities. After watching this video I was enlightened to the points of teaching student’s competition, cooperation and collaboration. I see myself using group projects in my classroom to teach my students all three of these important ideas. In the work place students will really benefit from learning these skills. Almost everything you do anymore is a collaborated and needs cooperation. My students will learn by working together with others students because learning is social. I will create a safe environment for my students where they can, “talk, build, create, and collaborate.”
